LOS ANGELES – Junior shortstop Maddie Amos drove home both of the Cal Poly softball team's runs during Friday's regular season opener at Loyola Marymount, but the Mustangs – who twice led the Lions – fell in eight innings at Smith Field, 3-2.
Game No. 2 of Cal Poly's scheduled Friday doubleheader versus Loyola Marymount was cancelled as was the team's Saturday doubleheader at No. 1 UCLA, Friday, Feb. 19 home doubleheader versus No. 10 Oregon and Sunday, Feb. 21 doubleheader at Fresno State due to a player shortage related to COVID issues around the program.
During Friday's opener, Cal Poly (0-1) grabbed the game's initial lead at the first opportunity as Amos delivered a two-out single to bring home sophomore right fielder Sydney Frankenberger.
Loyola Marymount (1-0), however, equalized during the bottom half of the first. After catcher Molly Grumbo produced a leadoff double, Mustang starting freshman righthander Bailey Doherty struck shortstop Megan Dedrick with a pitch. Two spots later, first baseman Peyton Angulo walked to load the bases before Doherty unleashed a wild pitch that brought home Grumbo.
Retired in order during the second, Cal Poly regained its lead in the third as Jeffries followed a one-out walk from senior center fielder Noellah Ramos with a base hit. Senior first baseman Hailey Martin then drew another walk before Amos flew out to left field and, with her sacrifice, brought home Ramos for the 2-1 advantage.
Doherty – who struck out six in her collegiate debut – conceded just one Lions hit between the second and fifth innings, twice retiring Loyola Marymount in order. In the sixth, however, the Lions tied the matchup once more through a two-out, solo homer from designated player Desiree Moreno.
Cal Poly stranded a baserunner in the top of the seventh and one more in the eighth after Martin reached on a leadoff Loyola Marymount fielding error. During the bottom half though, the Lions pushed across the decisive run after Moreno singled down the left field line with one out to plate Dedrick.
Junior lefthander Krystyna Allman (0-1), who relieved Doherty to begin the seventh, took the loss for Cal Poly.
