Cal Poly Tops Idaho for Third Place at SoCal Challenge
11/24/2021 2:26:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – Sophomore forward Kyle Colvin scored a career best 28 points and grabbed a collegiate high 10 rebounds to record his first double-double as the Cal Poly men's basketball program captured third place in the inaugural SoCal Challenge with a 67-63 victory against Idaho Wednesday afternoon inside the JSerra Pavilion.
Sophomore forward Brantly Stevenson added a season high 10 points and eight rebounds for Cal Poly (2-4), which trailed Idaho (1-5) just twice and never by more than two points.
Colvin's 28-point effort marked the highest regulation total by a Mustang since All-Big West Conference guard Donovan Fields scored 28 against Hawai'i (Feb. 23, 2019). Colvin's previous career scoring (20) and rebounding (nine) highs came at Sacramento State (Dec. 18, 2019).
Following an eight-day break, Cal Poly resumes a nine-game road trip – its lengthiest in 51 years – at California Baptist on Thursday, Dec. 2. Tip time is 7 p.m.
During Wednesday's matchup, a three-pointer from Idaho guard Rashad Smith provided the Vandals their final lead of the afternoon at 9-7 with 15-and-a-half minutes remaining in the opening period. Kickstarted by Colvin's only three-pointer of the afternoon, however, Cal Poly produced a 12-1 run during the ensuing five minutes to go up, 19-10.
The Mustangs led by as much as 30-18 following two free throws from sophomore guard Kobe Sanders seven minutes before the break before taking a 38-29 advantage into halftime.
A pair of layups from Idaho forward Tanner Christensen to open the second half shortened Cal Poly's lead to 38-33. The Mustangs, however, scored the next six points to reclaim a double-digit advantage.
Still trailing by 12 points with five minutes remaining, Idaho kept Cal Poly without a field goal to close the matchup. With the Vandals having closed the gap to 65-61 with 39 seconds to play, however, Cal Poly received two free throws from sophomore guard Camren Pierce to keep Idaho at a distance.
