RIVERSIDE – Sophomore point guard Camren Pierce (above) matched a career best with 15 points and junior guard Trevon Taylor added 12 Thursday evening, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program – after erasing a first-half, double-digit deficit – fell at California Baptist inside the CBU Events Center, 64-55.
Junior forward Alimamy Koroma finished with 10 points for Cal Poly (2-5) and Taylor missed his second Cal Poly double-double by a single rebound as the Mustangs – who trailed by as much as 11 in the first half before leading by five with nine minutes to play – were outscored, 23-9, to finish the game.
Facing California Baptist for the first time since Nov. 29, 1999, Cal Poly kept the Lancers (7-1) to a 39.3 (22-for-56) percent field goal mark. However, California Baptist – which earned its first victory against Cal Poly in six all-time meetings – committed just seven turnovers.
Cal Poly resumes a nine-game road trip – its lengthiest in 51 years – at San Diego on Sunday, Dec. 5 at 1 p.m.
A jumper from sophomore forward Kyle Colvin seven minutes into action Thursday handed Cal Poly its last lead of the opening half at 14-13 as California Baptist responded with a 13-2 run to secure its first double-digit advantage.
The Lancers led by as much as 30-19 following a jumper from guard Reed Nottage seven minutes before the break. Cal Poly, however, kept California Baptist to just one more field goal the remainder of the half and, outscoring the Lancers, 11-2, the Mustangs entered the break facing just a 33-32 deficit.
A Taylor jumper 59 seconds into the second half helped Cal Poly regain the advantage and the Mustangs led by as much as 46-41 with nine minutes to play after Pierce sank his third three-pointer.
Cal Poly, however, managed just a Koroma jumper during the ensuing three minutes as California Baptist recovered to take a 53-48 lead.
The Mustangs trimmed California Baptist's lead to five points down the stretch three further times, but drew no closer.
