Cal Poly Falls in Final Minute Sunday at San Diego, 52-51
12/5/2021 3:55:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN DIEGO – Junior forward Alimamy Koroma scored a game high 17 points, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program – after trailing San Diego for the final 29 minutes of Sunday's matchup inside Jenny Craig Pavilion – missed a potential game-winning shot at the buzzer and fell to the Toreros, 52-51.
Sophomore forward Brantly Stevenson (above) added 14 points for Cal Poly (2-6), which trailed San Diego (5-5) with two minutes to play, 52-45. Visiting San Diego for the first time in 26 years, Cal Poly received three-pointers from Stevenson and sophomore point guard Camren Pierce on successive possessions to draw within a point of the Toreros with 52 seconds remaining.
Cal Poly forced Toreros guard Bryce Monroe into a missed layup during San Diego's next possession, but Pierce's go-ahead jumper at the other end with 11 seconds left fell short. San Diego rebounded and with Cal Poly forced to foul to regain possession, Toreros forward Marcellus Earlington missed both free throw attempts.
With the Mustangs out of timeouts, Pierce rebounded Earlington's second errant free throw, but missed a jumper as time expired.
Pierce finished with eight points and a career best eight assists. Cal Poly committed just nine turnovers and kept San Diego to a 35.6 (16-for-45) percent field goal mark. The Toreros, however, sank nine three-pointers.
Cal Poly plays the first two of its three regular season games outside of California when visiting Portland State (Saturday, Dec. 11) and Portland (Monday, Dec. 13). Both matchups tip at 7 p.m.
Cal Poly scored Sunday's opening six points, but San Diego recorded 14 of the next 21 to take its first lead of the afternoon at 14-13 with 11 minutes remaining in the opening period.
The Mustangs led just once more the remainder of the afternoon after the second of San Diego guard Wayne McKinney III's three three-pointers handed the Toreros a 17-15 advantage with nine minutes to go.
Facing a 31-22 deficit at the break, Cal Poly received a Koroma jumper, a layup from junior guard Trevon Taylor and a Pierce three-pointer to open the second half.
Cal Poly's quickly found two-point deficit was as close as the Mustangs closed until the final one-point defeat.
