12/11/2021 9:25:00 PM | Men's Basketball
PORTLAND, Ore. – Graduate guard Jacob Davison (above) led three Mustangs in double-digit scoring figures with 16 points as the Cal Poly men's basketball program produced a 61-58 Saturday evening victory versus Portland State inside Viking Pavilion.
Junior forward Alimamy Koroma finished with 12 points and guard Trevon Taylor added 10 for Cal Poly (3-6), which led Portland State (3-5), 60-50, with four minutes remaining before being held without a field goal to close the matchup. Utilizing a layup from forward James Jean-Marie and six free throws, Portland State closed the gap to 60-58 with 33 seconds to go.
With the Vikings forced to foul to regain possession, Mustang sophomore guard Kobe Sanders missed his first free throw attempt before sinking the second. At the other end of Viking Pavilion, however, Portland State guard Michael Carter III's three-point attempt fell short.
Fouling once more, Portland State sent Davison to the free throw line with 14 seconds to go, but the guard missed both attempts. The Vikings though missed potential game-tying three-point attempts with three seconds remaining and as time expired.
Taylor and Davison each grabbed a team leading six rebounds for Cal Poly, which secured its first road victory since a 71-45 win at UC Riverside on Jan. 31, 2019.
Cal Poly continues a nine-game road trip with a Monday, Dec. 13 matchup at Portland. Tip time is 7 p.m.
A dunk from Portland State forward Khalid Thomas handed the Vikings their final lead of the evening at 13-11 nine minutes prior to halftime. Cal Poly responded with an 8-0 run to go up, 19-13.
A layup from sophomore guard Brantly Stevenson helped hand Cal Poly a 27-21 lead at the break. Holding the Mustangs to just three free throws to open the second half, Portland State shortened its deficit to 30-29 following a layup from guard Ezekial Alley with 16-and-a-half minutes to play.
Stevenson, however, returned to keep the Mustangs ahead with a three-pointer and Davison and Koroma layups quickly extended Cal Poly's lead to 37-30.
Two Davison free throws then helped Cal Poly lead, 44-35, with 12-and-a-half minutes to go.
