PORTLAND, Ore. – Junior guard Trevon Taylor (above) scored a collegiate best 27 points Monday evening and graduate guard Jacob Davison added 17, but two free throws with eight seconds remaining from Portland guard Mike Meadows decided Monday evening's matchup as the Pilots prevailed inside the Chiles Center, 78-77.
Junior forward Alimamy Koroma added 13 points and sophomore point guard Camren Pierce finished with 11 for Cal Poly (3-7), which sustained its third one-point loss of the season and fifth by four points or fewer. Cal Poly shot a season best 51.9 (28-for-54) percent from the floor and outrebounded Portland (8-3), 33-27.
Taylor's 27-point performance bested his previous collegiate high of 22 while with Wyoming. Taylor, who also grabbed a game high eight rebounds, finished 8-for-11 from the floor while sinking all 10 of his free throw attempts. The 27-point game marked the second highest output by a Mustang this season following guard Kyle Colvin's 28-point effort versus Idaho (Nov. 24).
The two sides traded the lead five times during the final 98 seconds with a jumper from sophomore forward Brantly Stevenson handing Cal Poly its last advantage of the night at 77-76 with 23 seconds to play.
At the other end of the Chiles Center, however, Pierce was whistled for a blocking foul in the lane and Meadows sank his two free throws to place the Pilots back in front.
During Cal Poly's final possession, Davison missed a jumper in the lane and Koroma failed to get a rebounded effort off before time expired.
Cal Poly's nine-game road trip continues at Fresno State on Friday, Dec. 17 and concludes at No. 4 UCLA on Wednesday, Dec. 22. Both games tip at 7 p.m.
The two sides took a 37-37 deadlock into halftime and Cal Poly led by as much as six points with 15-and-a-half minutes to go.
Portland though required all of 91 seconds to reel off an 8-2 run and tie the matchup, 54-54.
The Pilots matched Cal Poly once more before overtaking the Mustangs at 74-73 with 98 seconds remaining.
