Mustangs Top CSU Bakersfield, 2-0; Secure No. 3 Seed for Big West Tournament

BAKERSFIELD – Freshman Ocean Salari's first career goal and fellow forward Drew Patterson's second collegiate goal in as many matches helped decide the Cal Poly men's soccer program's Saturday evening regular season finale versus CSU Bakersfield as the Mustangs secured third place in the final Big West standings and the No. 3 seed for the conference tournament with a 1-0 victory against the Roadrunners.
Junior goalkeeper Carlos Arce-Hurtado recorded three saves to chalk up his sixth shutout of the season for Cal Poly (7-5-4, 5-1-3), which entered Saturday's match tied with CSU Bakersfield (6-9-1, 5-4-0) for third place on 15 points. Cal Poly's victory relegated the Roadrunners to the No. 4 seed.
Cal Poly will host sixth place UC Riverside (8-7-2, 3-4-2) in the Big West Tournament opening round on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. Entering the day in fifth place, UC Riverside slipped to the No. 6 seed after falling at home to previously last place UC San Diego, 2-1.
UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine shared the regular season title, each finishing on 20 points. UC Santa Barbara, despite a 2-0 loss Saturday at CSUN, earned the No. 1 seed for the Big West Tournament by virtue of having scored more in-conference goals than UC Irvine (the two programs split their regular season meeting and both finished with a plus-11 conference goal differential).
As the field's top two seeds, both UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine earned opening-round byes. In Wednesday's other opening round match, CSU Bakersfield hosts No. 5 UC Davis.
During Cal Poly's Saturday's match, the Mustangs forced CSU Bakersfield goalkeeper Scott Pengelly into three saves inside the opening 36 minutes before breaking through with the eventual game-winner four minutes from the break, as Salari (above) became Cal Poly's 10th different goalscorer this season.
Called upon to make one save in the first half, Arce-Hurtado stopped two CSU Bakersfield attempts five seconds apart in the 71st minute to preserve Cal Poly's 1-0 lead.
Patterson, who scored the game-winner in Cal Poly's 3-2 home win against UC Davis (Oct. 24) that clinched a spot in the Big West Tournament, doubled the lead in the 81st after taking a feed from freshman Max Kleinhammes and knocking his second shot of the evening past Pengelly.
