11/3/2021 9:57:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – A 54th-minute penalty from midfielder Leopoldo Hernandez marked the difference Wednesday evening as the Cal Poly men's soccer program's season came to a close with a 1-0 loss to the Highlanders in the opening round of the 2021 Big West Conference Tournament at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Junior goalkeeper Carlos Arce-Hurtado (above) chalked up four saves for third-seeded Cal Poly (7-6-4), including two in the opening 27 minutes and a third in the 43rd to keep Wednesday's match scoreless.
Just 30 seconds after the third save, UC Riverside defender Freymar Omarsson was whistled for a foul on Mustang freshman forward Ori Bitton at the top of the penalty box. With the penalty given, senior defender Andrew Forth stepped to the spot, but placed his attempt wide of the left post.
Nine minutes after the restart, UC Riverside found the game-winning goal following a Mustang foul near the end line. Hernandez's initial penalty attempt was saved by Arce-Hurtado before the rebounded attempt was knocked in at the left post.
Outshot 10-6, Cal Poly didn't place an attempt on target.
With Wednesday's victory, sixth-seeded UC Riverside advanced to face second-seeded UC Riverside in the semifinal round on Saturday, Nov. 6. Top-seeded UC Santa Barbara will host No. 5 UC Davis – which ousted CSU Bakersfield in Wednesday's other opening-round match, 3-1 – in Saturday's remaining semifinal.
