EWA BEACH, Hawai'i -- The Cal Poly men's golf team shot a season-best four-person four-under-par 284 Tuesday and jumped five spots into seventh place following the final round of the Hoakalei Country Club Invitational.
Junior Will Draper led the charge with a final-round five-under-par 67 that included six birdies and a lone bogey. Draper's round was the best of the day by any of the 79 golfers in the field and bested his career-best round as a Mustang by two strokes.
Draper's 54-hole five-under-par 211 total also is a personal best by seven shots and elevated the Chaminade High School graduate 11 spots into third place alone on the final leaderboard, his best collegiate finish and second in the top 10.
"When Will rolled in back-to-back birdie putts to finish, you could tell how much this round meant to him -- his senior year and low round in Hawaii," said second-year Mustang head coach Phil Rowe. "Early in the round, he stayed patient and was rewarded."
Joey Zambri added a 70 that featured five birdies and three bogeys, also finishing in the top 20, tied for 18th place with five other golfers, all with four-over-par 220 totals.
Freshman Baron Szeto contributed a 71 -- five birdies and four bogeys -- for a 222 aggregate and 29th-place tie while Austin Liu added a 77 for a 231 total and 60th-place tie. Drew Kim completed Cal Poly's scoring with a 76 for a 233 total and 69th-place tie.
"Our whole team was beaming with our team effort in the final round," said Rowe.
Competing as an individual, Luke Adam finished with a 75, slipping from third to eighth place with a career best-tying two-under-par 214 total.
Medalist honors went to Charlie Reiter of San Diego as his 70, 69 and 69 for an eight-under-par 208 total led the Toreros to the team title. Second-round leader Tony Hendricks of Loyola Marymount shot a final-round 74 for a 209 total and second place. Behind Draper were Garrett Boe of Cal State Fullerton and Caden Weber of Utah Valley, both with four-under-par 212 aggregates.
San Diego edged Loyola Marymount by two strokes, 857-859, for the first-place team trophy. Louisiana, the leader after two rounds, posted a 303 total Tuesday for an 870 aggregate and third place.
Draper led the field with his 17 birdies over 54 holes, two ahead of second-place Zambri, and was second in par-4 scoring at four under par. Draper and Adam shared second place in par-3 scoring at two under par and Adam also was fourth in par-4 scoring at two under par and eighth in total pars with 35.
Cal Poly concluded fall play with the event in Hawai'i and soon will begin preparations for the spring schedule which begins Feb. 7-8 at the Orange County Collegiate Classic co-hosted by Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine at the Coto de Caza Golf Club.
