Perez Double, Patterson Game-Winner Help Cal Poly Past UC Davis
10/24/2021 6:21:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior Manny Perez produced his fourth career two-goal game and fellow forward Drew Patterson's first collegiate goal stood as the game-winner in the 64th minute as the Cal Poly men's soccer program – trailing at halftime for the first time this season – overturned the deficit to rally for a 3-2 victory against UC Davis at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Junior goalkeeper Carlos Arce-Hurtado recorded four saves – including his final stop in the 86th minute – for Cal Poly (6-5-4, 4-1-3), which moved into a third-place tie in the Big West Conference standings on 15 points alongside CSU Bakersfield (6-8-1, 5-3-0). With both programs assured a top-four finish in the table, Cal Poly closes the regular season at CSU Bakersfield on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
A Cal Poly victory would guarantee the Mustangs no worse than third place in the final standings and the right to host a Big West Tournament opening-round game on Wednesday, Nov. 3.
UC Davis, which remained in seventh place on 10 points, struck for Sunday's opening goal in the 14th minute as a corner kick by forward Robert Mejia fell to midfielder Andy Velasquez, whose bicycled attempt went off Arce-Hurtado and Aggies defender Sean Bitter.
Just 12 minutes later, a corner kick from Mustangs freshman Logan Thralls was flicked on by fellow defender Andrew Forth for Perez, who notched his first goal of the day near the left post.
UC Davis, however, took a 2-1 lead into the break after midfielder Grant Fidler's attempt from distance bested Arce-Hurtado in the 43rd.
The Mustangs though equalized 12 minutes after the restart with another Thralls corner kick headed by Perez into the back of the Aggies net. With Thralls enjoying his first two collegiate assists, Perez equaled freshman defender Jacob Glass for the program scoring lead with four goals.
With two goals sunday, Perez now ranks eighth in program history with 16 goals and third with four multi-goal matches.
Then, 26 minutes from full time, Mustang senior defender Jackson Brady picked out Patterson with a cross from the right sideline. Patterson, the ninth different Mustang to score this season, fired past UC Davis goalkeeper Derrek Chan from 18 yards to help hand Cal Poly victory.
