10/20/2021 9:58:00 PM | Men's Soccer
RIVERSIDE – Cal Poly men's soccer senior defender Andrew Forth's 15th-minute goal cancelled out UC Riverside midfielder Leopoldo Hernandez's 12th-minute opener as the Mustangs earned a Wednesday road point with a 1-1 draw versus the Highlanders.
Junior goalkeeper Carlos Arce-Hurtado produced a season high six saves for Cal Poly (5-5-4, 3-1-3), which slipped to third in the Big West Conference standings after UC Irvine (6-7-3, 4-1-2) – which entered play Wednesday level with the Mustangs in second place on 11 points – defeated last place UC San Diego, 2-0. With 12 points, Cal Poly stayed one ahead of UC Riverside (8-5-2, 3-2-2), but occupies third alongside CSU Bakersfield (5-8-1, 4-3-0).
UC Riverside found Wednesday's opening goal with the first shot on target of the evening as midfielder Oscar Penate picked out Hernandez, whose shot to the right side of Cal Poly's goal bested Arce-Hurtado.
Just three minutes later, however, Cal Poly equalized with its first shot on frame as freshman defender Conner Leber produced his third career assist, setting up Forth's second goal of the year.
Both clubs combined for just one more shot on target to close the opening half with Mustang senior forward Emmanuel Perez stopped by UC Riverside goalkeeper Carlos Gonzalez in the 18th.
Into the second half, Arce-Hurtado chalked up a save in the 48th before stopping UC Riverside four times between the 71st and 80th minutes to keep the scoreline level. Cal Poly, meanwhile, saw forward Drew Patterson turned away by Gonzalez on 69 minutes before fellow freshman Ori Bitton was halted in the 84th.
Each side produced a shot on goal during the second overtime period.
Cal Poly closes its eight-game regular season home schedule when hosting UC Davis on Sunday, Oct. 24. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
