SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Mustang softball program has the opportunity to be represented twice at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics after righthander Ally Carda – Cal Poly's pitching coach from 2015-19 – was named to the 15-player United States National Team roster in preparation for the six-nation tournament.
Carda, a two-time Pac-12 Conference Player of the Year honoree while at UCLA (2012-15), has been a member of the U.S. squad since 2015 and, among other accomplishments, helped the Americans to the 2017 Pan American Championship gold medal and the 2016 Women's Softball World Championship.
Carda's selection comes five weeks after former Mustang righthander and 2017 NFCA All-America selection Sierra Hyland helped the Mexico Women's National Team qualify for the Tokyo Games during August's Softball Americas Olympic Qualifying Tournament in British Columbia.
With softball making its return to the Olympic schedule in Tokyo following a 12-year absence, Mexico owns one of six berths alongside the U.S. (2018 Softball World Championship winner), host Japan, Canada (2019 Softball Americas Qualifying Tournament runner-up), Italy (Africa/Europe qualifying champion) and Australia (Asia/Oceania qualifying champion).
