DAVIS – Junior righthander Lindsey Chalmers tossed a complete-game, four-hitter, but a fourth-inning, leadoff home run from UC Davis left fielder Marissa Jauregui marked the difference Sunday afternoon as the Mustangs fell in their series finale to the Aggies at LaRue Field, 1-0.
UC Davis starting righthander Katie Kibby (12-8) set down the first 11 Mustangs she faced before Cal Poly junior third baseman Stephanie Heyward singled up the middle with two down in the top of the fourth inning. Heyward, however, was thrown out on the next pitch attempting to steal second base.
Jauregui then homered on the first pitch from Chalmers in the bottom of the fourth inning to provide the Aggies a 1-0 lead.
Aside from Jauregui's homer, Chalmers allowed only two other Aggies in scoring position during the matchup and only one as far as third base. She struck out two Aggies while walking just one.
Cal Poly's best chance to equalize came in the top half of the fifth as senior designated player Sierra Hyland led off with a base hit before senior left fielder Courtney Tyler drew a full-count walk. After sophomore first baseman Hailey Martin grounded out to move both Mustangs into scoring position, however, sophomore pinch hitter Megan Nordin lined into a double play with Hyland caught off base at third.
The Mustangs (31-16, 7-8) then saw six of their final seven hitters retired to finish the game.
Cal Poly closes the home portion of its regular season schedule when hosting Hawai'i for a three-game, May 5-6 series at Bob Janssen Field. The series opens with a 6 p.m. matchup on Friday, May 5.
