Cal Poly Softball Falls in Series Finale at UC Santa Barbara, 3-0

SANTA BARBARA – Sophomore righthander Lindsey Chalmers struck out five UC Santa Barbara hitters without a walk, but the Cal Poly softball team stranded four baserunners Sunday afternoon – three in scoring position and two at third base – and dropped a 3-0 decision to close a three-game series versus the Gauchos at Campus Diamond.

The Mustangs (16-14, 0-3) stranded two baserunners in scoring position to close the top of the first inning while Cal Poly sophomore center fielder Amanda Sandoval (above) – who reached base with two down in the third after getting hit, stealing second and moving to third through a wild pitch by UC Santa Barbara starting righthander Ashley Ludlow (7-7) – was stranded to close the third.

Meanwhile, Chalmers (6-8) retired the opening six Gauchos hitters of the afternoon before shortstop Melanie Menor doubled to open the bottom of the third. Moved to third base with a sacrifice bunt, Menor scored the game's opening run through left fielder Kristen Clark's two-out, run-scoring hit.

The Gauchos (20-17, 3-0) doubled their lead with two down in the fourth as first baseman Sierra Altmeyer doubled to right center to bring home second baseman Arianna Palomares. Altmeyer then repeated the feat with one down in the sixth inning to plate Palomares once more for the 3-0 scoreline.

Offensively, Cal Poly saw 12 of its final 13 batters retired.

Despite taking the loss, Chalmers tossed 75.6 percent of her 90 pitches for strikes while the five strikeouts matched her second highest total of 2016.

Cal Poly opens the first of its four Big West home series when facing Cal State Fullerton for a three-game April 9-10 set. The series opens with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April 9.
