STOCKTON – Junior righthander Sierra Hyland struck out 11 Purdue hitters and sophomore center fielder Amanda Sandoval (top) produced the game-winning run with a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Cal Poly softball program opened the Pacific-hosted Libby Matson Tournament by edging Purdue on Friday, 3-2. Cal Poly completed Friday's sweep with a 3-1 victory against Cal State Bakersfield in game No. 2 as sophomore righthander Lindsey Chalmers struck out three against zero walks for the complete-game victory.
During Friday's opening game against Purdue (6-4), a Mustang error led to the Boilermakers' initial run in the top of the fourth and Purdue doubled its lead in the fifth through a run-scoring groundout by designated player Katie Harrison.
Offensively, Cal Poly was held hitless and to just one baserunner through the opening four innings by Purdue starting lefthander Lilly Fecho (5-2). Mustang senior first baseman Breana West broke up Fecho's no-hitter with a single to lead off the bottom half of the fifth and a one-out double from junior left fielder Courtney Tyler in the sixth scored Sandoval and sophomore shortstop Chelsea Convissar to tie the matchup at 2-2.
Hyland, who leads all NCAA Division I pitchers with 80 strikeouts this season, held Purdue hitless in the seventh. During the bottom half of the inning, Convissar reached base on a fielder's choice and, with two outs, stole second. Sophomore designated player Stephanie Heyward then reached through a fielding error by Boilermaker second baseman Mary Gooding and, with Convissar on third, Sandoval delivered the game-winning hit into left field.
Hyland (5-2), who accrued her third double-digit strikeout game of 2016, walked three and allowed five hits.
During Game No. 2, Cal Poly handed Chalmers all the runs needed with a three-run third inning. Heyward and Sandoval opened the inning with back-to-back singles before Tyler produced her second two-run double of the day. Hyland followed with a single and, with West batting, Tyler scored through a wild pitch from Roadrunners righthanded reliever Lyndsey Klimenko.
After conceding two Cal State Bakersfield hits in the first, Chalmers (3-2) retired the Roadrunners in order during the second and third. Cal State Bakersfield collected single hits in the fourth and fifth innings, but was retired in order in the sixth. The Roadrunners managed their lone run in the bottom of the seventh as a groundout from third baseman Karsyn Guzman scored second baseman Adrianna Cardoza.
Heyward matched a career high with three hits against Cal State Bakersfield.
Cal Poly (8-4) continues action at the Libby Matson Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 27 with rematches against Cal State Bakersfield (10 a.m.) and Purdue (2:30 p.m.).
