SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore forward Adam Olsen (above) recorded his first collegiate goal to provide the Cal Poly men's soccer program the halftime lead Friday evening versus UCLA, but the Bruins scored four times without reply during the second half as the Mustangs fell inside Drake Stadium, 4-1.
Senior goalkeeper Wade Hamilton chalked up a pair of saves for Cal Poly (3-2-1), which entered play Friday having prevailed during its last three trips to Drake Stadium. UCLA, however, scored twice within eight minutes of the second half restart and outshot the Mustangs, 12-8.
Cal Poly senior midfielder Chase Minter forced UCLA goalkeeper Juan Cervantes into a sixth-minute save and the Mustangs enjoyed a 22nd-minute attempt from junior midfielder Austin Wilcox before Olsen broke through on 32 minutes, latching onto a loose ball in the Bruin penalty area. Freshman midfielder George Grote was credited with his team-leading second assist for Cal Poly.
UCLA (2-3-0), which compiled six first-half shots, evened the match five minutes into the second half as defender Michael Amick fired his first goal of the season off of a Mustang defender.
The Bruins then produced the game-winning goal less than three minutes later as midfielder Jackson Yueill scored with an attempt from the top of the Mustang penalty area.
Bruin forward Seyi Adekoya rounded off UCLA's scoring the 63rd minute – with a shot near the left post – and the 77th – with a dribble into the Cal Poly penalty area.
The Mustangs, meanwhile, produced four shot attempts in the second half, but failed to place any on frame.
Cal Poly returns home to Alex G. Spanos Stadium to host the College of Charleston on Sunday, Sept. 20. Match time is 12:30 p.m.
