Mustang Softball Team Powers Past LIU Brooklyn, 7-2

CATHEDRAL CITY – Sophomore righthander Sierra Hyland struck out nine LIU Brooklyn hitters and sophomore second baseman Ashley Tornio's three-run homer – her first collegiate home run – provided the winning margin as the Cal Poly softball team topped LIU Brooklyn at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Saturday evening, 7-2.
LIU Brooklyn (1-12) notched Saturday's opening run off of Hyland (6-4) in the top of the first with right fielder Whitney West leading off the game with a single, stealing second and moving to third on a throwing error by Mustang freshman catcher Susanne Morris before scoring on another throwing error by Cal Poly freshman center fielder Amanda Sandoval.
Cal Poly, however, recovered to deadlock the game in the bottom half of the inning with sophomore left fielder Courtney Tyler drawing a two-out walk before scoring through a Hyland double.
The Blackbirds grabbed another brief lead in the third as West once again produced a leadoff single before stealing second and scoring with a double by shortstop Lauren Morizi.
The Mustangs, however, grabbed the lead for certain in the bottom half of the third. After leading off with a walk, Sandoval moved to second with a sacrifice bunt. Tyler followed with another walk and, with one down, Hyland singled into center field to bring home Sandoval. After an LIU Brooklyn pitching change, Tornio belted the first pitch she saw from Blackbirds righthanded reliever Shelley Proctor over the left field fence to provide Cal Poly a 5-2 lead.
Cal Poly then cushioned its lead in the fourth with Tyler plating sophomore pinch runner Shawna McDonough with a run-scoring single and, the sixth, as Tyler reached home for a 7-2 final scoreline through a wild pitch.
Cal Poly outhit the Blackbirds 12-7 with Tyler, Hyland, Tornio and junior first baseman Breana West all collecting two hits apiece.
In the circle, Hyland walked just one to earn the win.
Cal Poly (7-6) closes Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic action on Sunday, Feb. 22 versus Utah (11:30 a.m.) and UNLV (2 p.m.).
