SANTA BARBARA – Freshman starting righthander Sierra Hyland tossed a complete-game three-hitter with eight strikeouts, but UC Santa Barbara scratched out the winning run in the fifth inning to edge the Cal Poly softball program at Campus Diamond on Sunday afternoon, 2-1.
UC Santa Barbara (23-16, 3-3) opened Sunday's scoring in the bottom of the first inning as a one-out sacrifice fly from Gaucho catcher MeShalon Moore scored leadoff hitter and left fielder Kristen Clark.
Cal Poly (21-14, 3-3), however, countered to tie the matchup in the top of the second. Freshman right fielder Courtney Tyler drew a five-pitch leadoff walk before reaching second through a sacrifice bunt from Hyland and third through a groundout by senior designated player Shea Williams. Mustang senior catcher Mariah Cochiolo (right) then delivered a run-scoring single through the left side of the infield to tie the matchup.
After conceding UC Santa Barbara's opening run, Hyland (18-6) retired 10 of the next 12 hitters she faced without allowing a hit while striking out the Gaucho side in the third.
UC Santa Barbara, however, broke through for its winning run in the bottom of the fifth. After being hit by Hyland, leadoff Gaucho Sami Stark was replaced by pinch runner Jessica Reichner. Two batters later, Clark grounded a pitch to Mustang senior third baseman Jillian Andersen, who sailed a potential out at second base into right field. With runners at the corner bases, UC Santa Barbara attempted a double steal that resulted in Reichner being thrown out at home. Gaucho DeJanee Moore, however, singled into right field to score Clark for the 2-1 lead.
Prior to UC Santa Barbara's winning run in the fifth, Cal Poly's best chance to break the deadlock came during the fifth, but junior left fielder Emily Ceccacci hit into an inning-ending double play that saw Andersen thrown out at home.
With the loss, Cal Poly missed an opportunity to move into a three-way tie for second place in the Big West Conference standings alongside Hawai'i (19-16, 4-2) and Cal State Fullerton (23-14-1, 4-2).
Cal Poly returns to the central coast to open a three-game home stand against UC Davis on Saturday, April 12. First pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for 12 noon.
