LOS ANGELES – Highlighted by a career-high 15-strikeout performance from freshman righthander Sierra Hyland (right) in a 7-0 win against Dartmouth, the Cal Poly softball program capped preparations for Big West Conference play by sweeping a Sunday doubleheader at the Loyola Marymount Invitational. In addition to whitewashing Dartmouth, Cal Poly also bested LMU, 7-0.
During Sunday's opening triumph versus Dartmouth (10-12), Hyland (15-4) tossed a complete-game two-hitter and struck out nine of the first 10 batters she faced. Aside from walking two and conceding base hits in the fourth and fifth innings, Hyland struck out the Big Green side four times.
Offensively, the Mustangs produced the winning edge in the bottom of the first inning as Hyland doubled with two outs to score junior left fielder Emily Ceccacci.
The Mustangs doubled their lead in the third with Ceccacci scoring once more following a one-out single by freshman right fielder Courtney Tyler.
After another run-scoring single from Tyler in the fifth put Cal Poly up 3-0 and the Mustangs exploded for a four-run sixth inning that was highlighted by a three-run homer by senior left fielder Lauren Moreno.
During Sunday's second game against Loyola Marymount (17-13), Hyland struck out four and allowed three hits and two walks in four innings of work to earn another victory. Junior lefthander Chloe Wurst closed out the Lions, striking out four without conceding a hit to Loyola Marymount in three innings.
The Mustangs once again scored early and often with a groundout from senior catcher Mariah Cochiolo plating senior right fielder Cami Brown in the second to provide Cal Poly the only lead of the matchup.
Cal Poly tacked on another run in the third with Moreno doubling to score senior shortstop Kim Westlund. The Mustangs then put the game away in the fourth with Tyler and Westlund producing run-scoring singles either side of an RBI double from Cochiolo.
A two-run single from Ceccacci in the fifth inning capped Cal Poly's scoring.
Against Loyola Marymount, Moreno finished with a game-high three hits.
Cal Poly (18-11) returns home to open its 18th season of Big West Conference action when hosting Cal State Northridge for a three-game, March 29-30 series at Bob Janssen Field.
