Cal Poly Softball Hammers Indiana to Close Kajikawa Classic

TEMPE, Ariz. – Senior center fielder Lauren Moreno's second leadoff home run in three days and third of the Arizona State-hosted Kajikawa Classic set the victorious tone Sunday morning as the Mustangs closed their season-opening competition with a 9-2 triumph versus Indiana.

After employing Moreno's leadoff shot, Cal Poly (2-3) – which led the Hoosiers (1-4) wire-to-wire – posted a five-run second inning. After senior designated player Shea Williams led off the inning with a homer, senior shortstop Kim Westlund belted a two-run double to center field that plated junior left fielder Emily Ceccacci and Moreno. Senior catcher Mariah Cochiolo greeted Hoosier righthanded reliever Brooke Boetjer with a single up the middle to score Westlund before, two batters later, sophomore first baseman Breana West singled down the left field line to plate Cochiolo for a 6-0 lead.

Cal Poly tacked on another run in the third with Ceccacci singling up the middle to score senior right fielder Cami Brown.

After keeping Indiana to one hit through the opening five innings, Mustang starting lefthander Chloe Wurst (2-3) surrendered two Hoosier runs in the second, highlighted by catcher Kassi Famer's leadoff homer.

The Mustangs, however, answered with a two-run seventh as a Hoosier fielding error scored Moreno and senior third baseman Jillian Andersen.

Cal Poly continues its five tournament, pre-Big West Conference slate when visiting the Feb. 14-16 Stanford Nike Invitational. The Mustangs open their portion of the tournament on Friday, Feb. 14 versus Pacific (10 a.m.) and No. 22 Stanford (2:30 p.m.).
