CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The Cal Poly softball program wrapped action at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Sunday afternoon by throttling Long Island 14-2 before the Mustangs saw the finale against Utah end in a 1-1 tie after travel considerations forced the stoppage of play.
During Sunday's second contest against Utah (8-6-1), Cal Poly (5-10-1) – for the first time through 924 games during 19 Division I seasons – saw a game end in a draw. Cal Poly loaded the bases during the top of the first, but had the threat cancelled after senior center fielder Whitley Gerhart grounded into an inning-ending double play. The Mustangs returned during the second to strike the game's opening blow as a throwing error from Utah first baseman Katelyn Elliott on a ball bunted by Cal Poly junior right fielder Cami Brown allowed junior catcher Mariah Cochiolo (right) to score from second base.
Utah answered through miscue during the third as a fielding error by Mustang first baseman Madi Vogelsang on a ball struck by left fielder Kate Dickman allowed shortstop Kelsi Hoopiiaina to reach third before scoring on a throwing error by junior second baseman Ashley Romano.
Cal Poly twice advanced baserunners to third in the latter innings, but squandered chances to take the lead (most notably during the fifth, when Romano was picked off between third and home with one out).
However, Mustang starting lefthander Chloe Wurst (2-3-1) conceded just one Utah hit between the fourth and sixth innings to keep the game in stalemate.
After Cal Poly was retired in order during the top of the seventh, the game was halted due to Utah's flight arrangements.
During Sunday's opening contest versus Long Island, Cal Poly notched its 14 runs on just eight hits after the Blackbirds totaled five errors. The Mustangs struck during the top of the first as Cochiolo produced a two-run double down the left field line to score junior third baseman Jillian Andersen and Romano. The Mustangs then went up 3-0 in the second as a fielding error by Long Island second baseman Nichole Toven brought home Brown.
Cal Poly put the game away with an eight-run third inning highlighted by two-run singles from junior shortstop Kim Westlund and Cochiolo.
The Blackbirds dented Cal Poly's 11-0 advantage with two runs during the bottom of the third, but the Mustangs cemented the scoreline with three additional runs in the fourth, spearheaded by a two-run double by Gerhart that scored Westlund and Andersen.
Mustang freshman lefthander Nicole Innamorato (1-1) claimed her first collegiate victory by scattering six hits against zero earned runs.
Cal Poly continues action at the March 1-3 Cal State Fullerton-hosted Easton Invitational. Cal Poly's portion of the tournament draw opens on Friday, March 1 versus Indiana at 11:15 a.m. and No. 8 California at 1:30 p.m.
