SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – A second-inning, three-run homer from UC Santa Barbara third baseman Jenessa Jeppesen kickstarted the host's winning efforts on Sunday afternoon at Campus Diamond as the Cal Poly softball program fell during its series finale against the Gauchos, 8-0, in six innings.
UC Santa Barbara designated player Allison Taylor tripled during the first inning without reward and the Mustangs also squandered an extra-base hit in the top of the second. After sophomore catcher Mariah Cochiolo led off the inning with a double and sophomore right fielder Cami Brown reached on a fielding error by Jeppesen, Mustang freshman third baseman Celina Lafrades popped a potential sacrifice bunt into a double play that doubled Brown off at first base. Gaucho starting righthander Shelby Widsom (21-14) then struck out Cal Poly junior designated player Trista Thomas to strand Cochiolo at second.
The Gauchos (27-28, 12-6) capitalized on Cal Poly's missed opportunity during the bottom half of the second with a fielding error from Mustang starting lefthander Chloe Wurst (4-15) setting the table for Jeppesen's three-run homer.
Trailing 3-0 into the third, the Mustangs (12-34, 4-14) stranded left fielder Nora Sobczak (above) at third after the senior – who batted .636 (7-for-11) during the three-game series – produced a one-out double. Wisdom then retired the Mustangs in order during the fourth and fifth innings. With two Mustangs on and two down during the sixth, Wisdom also struck out Cochiolo to preserve the shutout.
The Gauchos added a run during the fourth through an RBI single up the middle from right fielder Brooke Putich before furthering their lead to 5-0 in the fifth after Wisdom produced a sacrifice fly to plate pincher runner DeJanee Moore.
Two additional Mustang errors during the bottom of the sixth contributed to a three-run inning by the Gauchos that ended the game. Putich produced the decisive blow and secured the run-rule victory with a fielder's choice that scored center fielder Jessica Soria.
Cal Poly wraps the 2012 regular season when hosting UC Riverside for a three-game May 11-12 series at Bob Janssen Field.
