SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – A third-inning grand slam from Cal State Northridge starting righthander Mia Pagano accounted for the only runs scored on Saturday afternoon as the Cal Poly softball team opened a three-game series against the Matadors with a 4-0 loss at Bob Janssen Field.
After failing to allow a Cal State Northridge baserunner past second during the first two innings, Mustang freshman righthander Jordan Yates (2-8) opened the third by yielding successive singles to Matador first baseman Madeline Sale and center fielder Samantha Sloniker before plunking catcher Mikayla Thielges to load the bases. Two batters later, Pagano drove her first career home run over the left field wall to cement the final scoreline.
Cal Poly sophomore shortstop Kim Westlund (above) led off the bottom of the first with a single through the right side of the infield, but Pagano (7-12) preserved her shutout by retiring the Mustang side in order during the second, third and fourth innings.
Freshman designated player Emily Ceccacci led off the Mustang half of the fifth by depositing a single into center field, but Cal Poly's final scoring opportunity was squandered when the next batter, junior third baseman Shea Williams, grounded into a double play. Pagano then ended the game by retiring Cal Poly in order during the sixth and seventh innings.
Cal Poly (9-26, 1-6) closes its three-game set against Cal State Northridge (8-29, 3-4) with a 12 noon doubleheader on Sunday. Live stats and streaming video from the matchup will be available HERE.
