PALO ALTO, Calif. – Senior left fielder Nora Sobczak (above) collected a game-high two hits against No. 10 Stanford on Sunday afternoon, but the Cal Poly softball program completed play at the 2012 Louisville Slugger Classic with a 10-0 loss in five innings against the host Cardinal at Jill and Boyd Smith Family Stadium.
Cal Poly starting righthander Rebecca Patton (5-6) kept Stanford (24-6) at bay until the Cardinal produced a four-run third inning that was highlighted by junior designated player Jenna Rich's two-run triple to right center field.
Stanford then returned during the fourth to put the game away with a six-run frame that included a two-run single by senior shortstop Ashley Hansen and a three-run homer to left field by Rich.
Cal Poly's chief chance to break through against Stanford came during the top of the first with Sobczak singling to lead off the game before advancing to second base through sophomore Jillian Andersen's sacrifice bunt. Sophomore third baseman Kim Westlund then advanced Sobczak to third with an infield single, but Stanford starting righthander Nyree White struck out Mustang sophomores Ashley Romano and Madi Vogelsang to end the threat.
The Mustangs (7-13) continue their season at the March 17-18 Saint Mary's Classic in Moraga, Calif. Tournament play opens for Cal Poly with a 10 a.m. St. Patrick's Day doubleheader against Iowa State and Santa Clara.
