Mustangs Split Sunday Slate at Campbell/Cartier Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Senior designated player Anna Cahn's third home run on Sunday afternoon accounted for the winning margin as the Cal Poly softball program finished play at the San Diego State-hosted Campbell/Cartier Classic with a 2-1 triumph versus the host Aztecs. Despite two homers from Cahn during Sunday's opening game, however, the Mustangs suffered a 10-2, five-inning loss against Baylor.

Versus San Diego State (8-10), Cal Poly was held without a baserunner during the initial three innings and to just a pair of hits until the sixth, when junior left fielder Nora Sobczak singled with one out. Two batters later and with two down, Cahn swatted her Big West Conference-leading eighth homer of the season over the center field wall to provide the Mustangs the 2-1 win.

Cal Poly sophomore righthander Trista Thomas (1-1) earned her first collegiate victory by holding San Diego State hitless for the initial four and one-third innings. Her lone blemish was allowing a one-out run-scoring single to Aztec third baseman Ashley Rose in the fifth.

Thomas, who finished with four strikeouts, allowed just two hits.

During Sunday's opening game versus Baylor (19-2), Cal Poly grabbed the initial lead during the top of the second as Cahn lashed her first homer of the matchup to right field. Highlighted by run-scoring singles from Baylor third baseman Megan Turk and center fielder Kathy Shelton, however, the Bears struck back with four runs during the bottom half of the inning to snatch the lead for good.

The Bears added two additional runs in the third and three in the fourth before Turk's second run-scoring hit of the day in the fifth provided Baylor the run-rule victory.

Cahn, who struck out three Bears in the circle, homered again during the fourth.

Cal Poly (3-17) continues action when opening the home portion of its 2011 campaign at Bob Janssen Field with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday, March 13 versus Notre Dame.
