SAN DIEGO, Calif. – A three-run third inning by No. 25 Houston stood as the eventual winning edge as the Cal Poly softball team opened play at the San Diego State-hosted Campbell/Cartier Classic on Friday afternoon with a 9-1 loss against the Cougars at SDSU Softball Stadium.
Houston (15-4) grabbed the only lead of the game before Cal Poly had the chance to bat as shortstop Brooke Lathan singled home third baseman Holly Anderson with two outs in the top of the first.
Cal Poly responded during the bottom half of the inning as senior catcher Stephanie Correia (above) and senior designated player Anna Cahn produced successive two-out singles. Junior right fielder Nicole Lund, however, grounded out as Cal Poly squandered an opportunity to draw even with the Cougars.
Highlighted by second baseman Jennifer Klinkert's two-run single during the third, Houston furthered its lead to 4-0. An error by Lund brought home Anderson with one out during the fourth before a run-scoring single from designated player Baillie Lott upped Houston's lead to 6-0 and drove Mustang starting righthander Rebecca Patton (1-9) from the circle.
Despite collecting seven hits, Cal Poly (2-14) was held scoreless until freshman center fielder Cami Brown scored on a wild pitch from Houston starting righthander Haley Outon (2-0). The Cougrs, however, added four runs during the top of the seventh to finalize the scoreline.
Correia finished with two hits for Cal Poly, which continues Campbell/Cartier Classic action on Saturday, March 5 versus BYU at 11:15 a.m. and No. 6 UCLA at 8:15 p.m.
