A key member of the proud tradition of Cal Poly track & field, Sharon Hanson-Lowery entered the Hall of Fame as a four-time NCAA All-American and the current record holder of the Cal Poly women's heptathlon mark and 400 hurdles.
Sharon, who began her career in track and field in Singapore at the age of 8, holds the all-time career record in the 400-meter hurdles and helped lead Cal Poly to a second-place finish at the NCAA National Championships in 1987. In that meet, Hanson-Lowery placed second in the 400-meter hurdles, third in the 100-meter hurdles, and was a part of the relay team that finished fourth in the 400-meter relay and sixth in the 1600 relay.
After her career at Cal Poly, she placed second in the heptathlon at the 1991 Pan American Games, then went on to compete in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, placing ninth in the heptathlon despite five or six knee surgeries. She was actively involved in the Athletes Advisory Committee for the Washington-Baltimore Regional 2012 Coalition. This group was formed to bid for the 2012 Olympics. She currently resides in Virginia with her two children and husband Wylie.
