Pete Cutino played four years of varsity water polo and three years in varsity swimming at Cal Poly. He was a conference champion and Cal Poly record holder.
He coached swimming and water polo at U.C. Berkeley from 1963 to 1991. Cutino coached eight NCAA Division I National Championship teams and produced more than 70 NCAA All-Americans and five Olympians. Pete has been the water polo head coach for the Pan American Games, Olympic Games and World University Games.
He has been honored as USA Water Polo Coach of the Year, NCAA Coach of the Year, and has received the "Peter Ueberroth Award" for excellence and contributions to the sport of water polo. Each year, the best men's and women's intercollegiate water polo players are given the Pete Cutino Award, the equivalent of the Heisman Trophy in football.
Cutino, who passed away in September 2004, and his wife Louise had three grown children and lived in Monterey, Calif. He authored several books on water polo and wrote numerous articles in professional magazines and journals concerning aquatics.
