The "Jet" may have been the most exciting runner in Cal Poly football history. Perry held or shared numerous school rushing and scoring records and was a member of the 1953 championship team. For 12 years, Perry's record for most touchdowns (13) stood. He received All-Conference and All-America honors.
Jeter played professional football for the Chicago Bears in 1956-57. With the Bears, he played halfback, gaining 316 yards and scoring two touchdowns, before an injury ended his career early. He returned to Steubenville, Ohio, and earned his bachelor's degree in education at Kent State.
Perry coached football, basketball, and track for most of his 25 years with the Steubenville City School District. He was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at San Bernardino Valley College.
Perry retired in May of 1999 from Steubenville City Schools and passed away in May 2019 of Alzheimer's. He and his wife of 52 years, Mildred, lived in Steubenville, Ohio. They had three children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was a deacon at Mt. Carmel Community Baptist Church for over 30 years.
In 2016, he was inducted into the Wheeling Ironman Hall of Fame.
