Cal Poly finished third in the nation in 1988, Giusto's senior season. He defeated four of the top 100 players in Division I,including an upset over then-No. 1-ranked Jeff Tarango of Stanford, and finished the season ranked No. 11 in singles and, with Neal Berryman, No. 5 in doubles.
He earned All-American honors in both singles and doubles and was a recipient of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award.
As a junior in 1987, Giusto finished the year ranked No. 9 in singles and, with Rodney Gabuya, No. 8 in doubles, leading Cal Poly to a fifth-place national finish. He reached the Round of 16 in the individual nationals three times (1984, 1987, 1988) and was a doubles quarterfinalist as a junior, thus earning All-American honors in both singles and doubles.
Giusto was 16-1 in duals as a freshman in 1984, reaching the Round of 16 in singles for his first All-American certificate, and qualified for nationals in both singles and doubles as a sophomore in 1985.
Giusto played varsity tennis for four years at Carpinteria High School, leading the Warriors to a pair of CIF-Southern Section Single-A team titles and a runner-up finish. He was a two-time league champion in singles, finished second to a teammate his other two prep seasons and was undefeated in league dual matches all four years. Giusto also was a three-time basketball letter winner.
