Fred Whittingham excelled in football, boxing and track and field at Cal Poly, earning a total of six letters.
He was a tight end and defensive end on the 1960 and 1961 football teams, earning Little All-American honors in 1961, then moved to offensive guard in 1962, earning All-Coast honors. Nursing a concussion in a hospital, Whittingham was not on the plane which crashed in Toledo, Ohio, in 1960.
He also competed in track and field for three seasons, placing third in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships in both the discus and shot put in 1961.
Fred, a 1962 Cal Poly graduate in physical education, earned his master's degree three years later. He went on to play in the National Football League for the Los Angeles Rams (1963-64), Philadelphia Eagles (1965-67), New Orleans Saints (1967-68), Dallas Cowboys (1969) and New England Patriots (1970). He earned a berth in the 1968 Pro Bowl.
His coaching career in the college ranks included stints with Brigham Young (1973-81) and Utah (1992-94,1998-2000). Fred also coached in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders (1995-97) and Los Angeles Rams (1982-91). Fred passed away on Oct. 27, 2003, in Provo, Utah.
