Dick Anderson was an emeritus professor of physical education and was Cal Poly's athletic director from 1963-68. Dick started his swimming and water polo coaching career in 1947 and retired in 1983. More than 40 of his swimming competitors were recognized as All-Americans with one of those being selected to represent the United States in the 400 meters in the 1960 Olympic Games. Dick received numerous awards from the aquatic community.
Dick was an inspiration to his former student athletes and helped place many graduating students as teachers and coaches in high schools, community colleges and universities. One of his former athletes said it best:"He had a magic touch. He could recognize those athletes having problems and help them individually. No one was left out."
Dick, who passed away in 2006, and his wife Jane traveled extensively. Dick had two daughters and one son. He swam often and played golf twice a week.
