Bringing nearly two decades of collegiate coaching experience – including 15 as head coach – Brie Galicinao is in her third season as the Cal Poly’s pitching coach.
Galicinao’s impact upon Cal Poly’s rotation was immediate during her initial 2023 season with righthander Sophia Ramuno earning both All-Big West and Big West All-Freshman Team selection. Ramuno repeated an All-Big West honor in 2024 as Cal Poly’s staff finished second among conference programs in total strikeouts (228) and opposing batting average (.259) and third in ERA (3.02).
Galicinao arrived at Cal Poly in July 2022 after serving as UC Santa Barbara’s head coach from 2008-22. A two-time Big West Coach of the Year honoree with the Gauchos, Galicinao remains ninth in conference history with 343 total victories and 12th with 138 conference wins. Galicinao’s teams produced more 30-win seasons – five – than any previous UC Santa Barbara head coach.
Galicinao became the 11th coach to win 300 games at a Big West member program on May 11, 2019 while UC Santa Barbara's 35-win season in 2014 matched the program record for total victories.
Under Galicinao, UC Santa Barbara produced 63 total All-Big West selections with the program enjoying 34 Big West All-Academic honors. UC Santa Barbara’s first major individual conference accolades were all earned with Galicinao on staff in Big West Pitcher of the Year (Jennifer Davis, 2007), Field Player of the Year (Tiffany Wright, 2008), Freshman Pitcher of the Year (Krista Cobb, 2009) and Freshman Field Player of the Year (Shelby Wisdom, 2012).
“Brie knows the Big West extremely well and knows how to win,” 20th-year Cal Poly head coach Jenny Condon said. “Her knowledge and experience working with pitchers and calling games will help our pitching staff from the start. She’ll be a great complement to our staff and I can't wait to get her on campus working with our team.”
In 2017, Galicinao directed UC Santa Barbara to 31 victories and the program’s fourth postseason Division I appearance with a berth in the inaugural National Invitational Softball Championship. A year prior, the Gauchos set program offensive team records for batting average (.302), hits (460) and RBI (302).
Galicinao led UC Santa Barbara to 31 victories in 2013, recording a fifth winning season in six years. UC Santa Barbara finished second in the 2012 Big West standings with a 15-6 mark – its best showing to date – as Galicinao collected a second conference Coach of the Year award.
Galicinao served as UC Santa Barbara’s assistant coach in 2006 and 2007 and, in the second season, helped the Gauchos qualify for the program’s last NCAA Tournament appearance.
A four-year starting pitcher and utility player at Princeton (1999-02), Galicinao hit better than .350 three times and graduated with a 1.47 career ERA. Galicinao served as captain during her 2002 senior season, helping lead Princeton to an Ivy League title and NCAA Tournament appearance while earning spots on the NCAA Tournament All-Region and NFCA All-Region Teams and the C. Otto Von Kienbusch award as the university’s Sportswoman of the Year.
She became the first player to earn both Ivy League Pitcher and Player of the Year honors in the same season as a junior in 2001. She then became the first athlete to earn a second Ivy League Pitcher of the Year honor as a senior.
Upon graduating, Galicinao played and led softball clinics in Italy. She returned stateside to serve as Princeton’s Director of Athletic Relations and as an assistant coach with the Tigers for the 2003 and 2004 seasons.
The Stockton, Calif., native earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Princeton and M.A./Ph.D. in education from UC Santa Barbara.
