Templeton is coached by former Cal Poly lineman and Arena Football League standout Dan Loney. Berry earned first-team All-Los Padres League honors as both a junior and senior. He also was a first-team All-San Luis Obispo County and All-CIF-Southern Section Western Division selection as a senior and was chosen as Templeton's lineman of the year. He earned all-county and all-state honors as a sophomore. Berry also competed on Templeton's track and field team with best marks of 47 feet, 7 3/4 inches in the shot put and 149-7.5 in the discus. He received offers from Nevada, Sacramento State and San Jose State and also was recruited by UC Davis, Army, San Diego State, Boise State, Utah State and Fresno State. Berry chose Cal Poly's offer because "I have always wanted to go there. I grew up just north of San Luis Obispo and have been a fan of Cal Poly football for as long as I can remember. Cal Poly is the best fit for me academically and also has an outstanding football program. After I met all of the coaches and players, I knew I wanted to be a part of this program." Former Cal Poly fullback Jake Romanelli (2008-11) also is a Templeton High School graduate.
