2012 -- Played his first collegiate game against Idaho State and carried the ball twice, gaining one yard and losing two, during a 69-yard, 13-play scoring drive late in the fourth quarter ... completed three of five passes for 45 yards and was intercepted by Tim Puerling in 2013 Spring Game.
2011 -- Squad member but did not play in any games as a sophomore ... completed one of three passes in 2012 Spring Game ... also rushed three times for 12 yards.
2010 -- Member of team but did not play in any games as a redshirt freshman ... completed three of 11 passes for 28 yards in 2011 Spring Game.
2009 – Redshirt ... completed four of five passes for 22 yards and rushed for 16 yards on three carries in 2010 Spring Game.
High School -- Johnston is the third son of former Cal Poly quarterback Craig Johnston to play football for the Mustangs, following quarterback Pat, now an assistant coach at Cal Poly, and Phil, who has graduated ... passed for over 5,400 yards in the last two seasons at Carmel High with a total of 14 games over the 200-yard mark in passing yardage -- seven each year ... as a senior, completed 176 of 280 passes (63 percent) for 2,667 yards and 35 touchdowns with just seven interceptions as Carmel posted an 8-2 mark and won the Mission Trail Athletic League title with a 6-0 record ... passed for 409 yards and five touchdowns against King City, 365 yards and six scores against Soledad and had two other games with five touchdown passes ... also rushed for 412 yards and nine scores ... as a junior, completed 206 of 344 passes (60 percent) for 2,773 yards and 30 touchdowns while rushing for 262 yards and a pair of scores as the Padres finished 7-4, including a 5-1 mark for second place in the Mission Trail Athletic League ... both teams earned CIF-Central Coast Section playoff berths ... Johnston is Monterey County’s all-time career passing leader with 516 completions in 844 attempts for 8,162 yards and 93 touchdowns ... a three-time All-CIF-Central Coast Section quarterback, twice an MTAL offensive MVP, a three-time All-Monterey County selection and three-time All-MTAL first-team signal caller ... also played varsity basketball for four seasons and competed in sprints and the long jump on the Padres’ track and field team ... earned Citizenship Award in 2006 and made the Honor Roll all four years ... also visited San Diego State before choosing Cal Poly.
