Pat Johnston, who has one brother currently playing on the CalPoly football team and another who completed his eligibility threeyears ago, is serving his sixth year as a defensive assistant coachat Cal Poly, working with the secondary as well as specialteams.
Johnston, 27, was a backup quarterback for the Mustangs from2005-07 after a redshirt year, primarily calling the signals forthe scout team.
At Carmel High School, Johnston completed 147 of 264 passes for2,022 yards and 21 touchdowns as a senior under head coach CraigJohnston, a former Cal Poly quarterback and Pat's father. Patearned second-team small schools all-state honors and was namedMission Trail Athletic League Offensive Player of the Year in2003.
Johnston also was honored on the All-Monterey County first teamas selected by the Monterey County Herald. He completed 23 of 45passes for 295 yards and three touchdowns in one game againstGonzales and led Carmel to a 5-4 overall record and 4-2 for asecond-place tie in league play. Johnston played in the SalinasJaycees All-Star Football Game.
In his three-year prep career, Johnston threw for 5,020 yards, aleague record until his brother Kenny surpassed the mark, andpassed for 51 touchdowns. Pat also was an outfielder on Carmel'sbaseball team which won its ninth straight Mission Trail AthleticLeague title in 2004. He was a first-team all-MTAL outfielder.
Johnston was named to Carmel High's Honor Roll every quarter. Hewas born Dec. 11, 1985, in San Luis Obispo and graduated from CalPoly in June 2009 with a bachelor's degree in history. He plans topursue a master's degree in education.
Besides Kenny, now a senior on the Mustang football team,another brother, Phil, was a member of the Mustangs as a linebackerfrom 2006-09.
Johnston married Megan Surber in June 2013 and the couple hasone child, Scarlett, born Oct. 5, 2011.
