SAN LUIS OBISPO – Seeking its first 3-0 Big Sky Conference start in 14 seasons, the Cal Poly football program hosts Weber State on Saturday, Oct. 3. Kickoff on ESPN+ is 5 p.m. for Cal Poly (3-2, 2-0), which remained unbeaten in Big Sky play with a 31-27 victory at Eastern Washington (Sept. 26) – a result that marked the second time in as many conference games that quarterback Anthony Grigsby, Jr., found wide receiver Tayvion McCoy for a last-minute, game-winning touchdown pass. The last time Cal Poly started Big Sky play with a 3-0 mark (2012), the Mustangs closed the year with a share of the conference title. Featuring three of the Big Sky’s top four tacklers, Cal Poly also seeks its first victory against Weber State (2-3, 1-1) since 2014. The Wildcats, resuming play following a 44-41 home setback to Portland State (Sept. 26), lead the Big Sky with 470.0 yards of total offense per game and ranking second with 293.0 passing yards per contest. Here’s the complete rundown for Cal Poly’s sixth week of action.
THE GREEN ZONE
A 269-yard rushing effort at Eastern Washington (Sept. 26) – the second highest single game total in program history – now has junior running back Jaden Green ranked eighth among FCS players at 122.4 yards per game. Green, who also rushed for 126 yards versus San Diego (Sept. 19), scored on touchdown runs of 55 and 53 yards at Eastern Washington. An offseason transfer from Lehigh and Cal Poly’s primary kick returner, Green also ranks second in the FCS with 169.4 all-purpose yards per game.
GRIGSBY CEMENTS PLACE UNDER CENTER
Named Mustang starting quarterback the day of Cal Poly’s 38-34, season-opening victory against Idaho (Aug. 28), Anthony Grigsby, Jr., accounted for all five of Cal Poly’s touchdowns and 319 passing yards versus the Vandals to earn Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week praise. He then averaged 207 passing yards per Cal Poly’s next four matchups – including a 249-yard effort at FBS San Jose State (Sept. 12). Having emerged as one of the top FCS offensive threats, Grigsby ranks third nationally with 13 passing touchdowns, 20th with 1,146 passing yards (already exceeding last year’s total), 21st with 92 completions and 31st with 18.4 completions per game. Responsible for 84 of Cal Poly’s 151 points this season (53.6 percent), Grigsby has thrown just four interceptions in 150 attempts thus year.
THE D IN D’AMATO
An All-Big Sky first team honoree last year and Buck Buchanan Award Watch List selection this season for most outstanding FCS defensive player, senior linebacker Mikey D’Amato ranks second nationally with 60 tackles and 12.0 per game and eighth with 26 total tackles. The Big Sky’s leading tackler both last season and this year, D’Amato – with a season best 14 tackles against Idaho (Aug. 28) – ranks 19th in program history with 242 during his career.
MILLER TIME
Backed by a career high 12-tackle performance at San Jose State (Sept. 12) and 11 versus San Diego (Sept. 19), senior defensive back RL Miller now ranks third among FCS performers with 31 solo tackles and 20th with 45 total tackles. An offseason transfer from Fresno State, Miller remains the Big Sky’s leading solo tackler.
OLSON BACK IN BUSINESS
The Big Sky’s second leading tackler last fall, Kenny Olson provides Cal Poly three of the conference’s top four tacklers with the fifth-year linebacker – after a career high 16-tackle performance at Eastern Washington (Sept. 26) – ranked sixth nationally with 52 total tackles and ninth with 10.4 per game. With 247 career tackles, Olson ranks 18th in program history.
BIG PLAY TAY
With not one (Aug. 28 versus Idaho) but two (Sept. 26 at Eastern Washington) game-winning touchdown receptions in the final minute this season, junior wide receiver Tayvion McCoy enters Saturday’s matchup with Weber State ranked eighth among FCS players with 423 total receiving yards and 16th with 84.6 per game. Only one Big Sky player – Weber State’s Noah Kjar – has caught more touchdown passes than McCoy’s four. An offseason transfer from Ventura College, McCoy finished with a collegiate best 170 receiving yards during his Aug. 28 Cal Poly debut.
CAL POLY VERSUS WEBER STATE
Having dropped seven straight in the series, Cal Poly seeks its first victory against Weber state since a 30-24 road win on Oct. 11, 2014. Weber State leads the all-time series, 12-6.
LOOKING AHEAD (SATURDAY, OCT. 10)
Cal Poly plays consecutive road games just once this season, a stretch that begins Saturday, Oct. 10 at No. 12 Idaho State. Kickoff inside the ICCU Dome is 3 p.m. PT for Cal Poly, which looks to snap a three-game slide against the Bengals dating to a 32-29 home victory on Nov. 13, 2021. Having dropped four straight in Pocatello, Cal Poly also seeks its first road win against Idaho State since Oct. 27, 2007. The Mustangs lead the all-time series, 13-11, dating to the first matchup – a 13-7 Cal Poly road victory – on Nov. 25, 1937.
