SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior running back Jaden Green (above) ran for 170 yards and two touchdowns and quarterback Anthony Grigsby, Jr., added 213 passing yards and another pair of touchdowns, but the Cal Poly football team – playing the program’s first overtime game in seven years Saturday evening – was edged in double overtime by Weber State at Mustang Memorial Field, 42-34.
Senior wide receiver Fidel Pitts and junior tight end Alek Marshall also caught touchdown passes for Cal Poly (3-3, 2-1), which trailed Weber State (3-3, 2-1) at the break, 17-9.
Seeking its first 3-0 Big Sky Conference start in 14 years, Cal Poly opened the second half with a two-yard scoring rush from Green, completed the two-point conversion to pull level and surged ahead through a 22-yard field goal from junior Josue Lopez.
The Wildcats closed the third quarter with a one-yard touchdown rush by running back Spencer Ferguson to go up 24-20, but the Mustangs – with nine minutes remaining – edged back in front with Grigsby finding Pitts from 15 yards for a 27-24 advantage.
Both sides forced the other to punt on the next two possessions and Weber State, receiving the ball back with two minutes to play, drove 60 yards in 65 seconds before David Dellenbach kicked a 38-yard field goal to force overtime.
Green’s second touchdown rush in the first overtime handed Cal Poly a brief lead with Weber State equalizing through quarterback Nate Dahle’s 25-yard touchdown scramble up the middle.
Dahle then picked out wide receiver Tate Kjar in the second overtime period and, with the Wildcats forced to go for the two-point conversion, Dahle completed his pass attempt to brother Noah Kjar for the 42-34 final scoreline.
Cal Poly, meanwhile, was unable to secure a first down during its second-overtime possession.
