SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women’s tennis team returns home this week to host its final two regular season matches, beginning with a dual against UC Riverside at noon Wednesday.
Live scoring for Wednesday’s match at the Ronca Tennis Center is available HERE. Follow Cal Poly women’s tennis on Instagram (@calpolywtennis) and Twitter/X (@CalPolyWTennis) for live updates throughout the match.
A win Wednesday for the Mustangs against the Highlanders would set up a regular season finale showdown with No. 48 UC Santa Barbara on Saturday at the Ronca Tennis Center, with the victor earning the No. 1 seed in the Big West Championships, which take place April 22-25 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
Cal Poly has already locked up a top two seed in next week’s conference tournament, allowing them to receive a double bye to the Big West Championship semifinals. With a 6-1 record in Big West play, the Mustangs currently sit two matches in front of third place teams Cal State Fullerton (5-3 BW) and CSUN (4-3 BW), and own head-to-head tiebreakers against both. UCSB leads the conference with a 7-0 Big West record.
The Mustangs (11-8) are coming off a two-match road trip to Southern California that saw them secure a 4-3 win at Cal State Fullerton on Friday before falling 4-3 at UC Irvine on Sunday.
Junior Candela Aparisi will carry a five-match winning streak in singles into Wednesday’s match with UC Riverside, boasting an 11-7 record on the season and a 5-1 mark in conference play. Aparisi and doubles partner Natalie Lynch also own a team-best 10-5 record as a tandem this season while playing primarily at the No. 2 spot and a 4-0 record in Big West play.
UCR is 2-12 this season and 0-8 in Big West play, most recently falling 7-0 at Hawai’i on Monday. Last year, Cal Poly rolled to a dominant 7-0 victory in Riverside and the Mustangs are 26-0 all-time against the Highlanders.
Cal Poly wraps up regular season play when they host Blue-Green rival UCSB at 1 p.m. Saturday as part of Alumni Weekend. The match will also serve as the program’s Senior Day as the team will honor its three seniors — Kennedy Buntrock, Sarah MacCallum and Alexandra Ozerets — following the conclusion of the dual.
This Friday at 4 p.m., the Cal Poly women’s tennis program is inviting all high school girls interested in learning more about college tennis and future career paths to a free alumni panel. The discussion will be led by former Mustang Nancy Abrams, developer of the USTA Women in Coaching Cohort, and feature alums Brittany Blalock, Jennifer Azevedo, Sandra Bainter and more. The panel will take place inside the Mott Athletics Center classroom on the second floor of the facility. You can sign-up to attend the free alumni panel HERE.
