SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly Men’s Tennis will be back under the lights of Ronca Tennis Center, for the first time since early February, on Friday against San Diego State before a Sunday matinee with Pacific.
The Mustangs (7-3) enjoyed a successful trip to Chicago last weekend, claiming two victories in three days against a competitive field. After dropping their opener to tournament host DePaul (4-1), the team rebounded with a gritty 4-2 win over Dartmouth and a decisive 4-1 victory over Army to close out the George Lott Classic.
Against Dartmouth, Cal Poly secured a tightly contested doubles point thanks to the duo of Luc Hoeijmans and Jovan Lubbe. In singles, the Mustangs got clutch performances from some upperclassmen, with Raz Haviv and Sean Kamyshev earning straight-set wins before Hoeijmans clinched the match with a hard-fought three-set victory at the No. 1 position.
The momentum carried into the finale against Army. After dropping the doubles point, Cal Poly displayed resilience by taking four singles matches in quick succession. Hoeijmans continued his dominant run with a surgical 6-0, 6-4 win at the top spot, while Kamyshev battled through a three-set thriller. Jovan Lubbe and Aaron Eliscu added straight-set victories to seal the team win.
The Aztecs (4-8) also enjoyed a recent successful stretch, taking down Big West foes UC Davis (4-1) and UC Riverside (4-0). They will be Cal Poly’s opponent under the lights at 5 p.m. on Friday. Hospitality is available and can be purchased HERE!
San Diego State is 4-8 on the season following a doubleheader sweep over UC Davis and UC Riverside last Thursday. The Aztecs took down the Aggies 4-1 before shutting out the Highlanders 4-0.
Cal Poly trails in the all-time series 4-8 with the most recent match against San Diego State yielding a 4-1 Mustangs loss. Prior to that, the Mustangs took three straight wins between 2017-2022.
The Mustangs welcome the Pacific Tigers (5-6) who also played a pair of Big West opponents last week but with reversed results to that of SDSU. The Tigers were outbattled by UC San Diego (4-2) and No. 73 Hawai’i (4-1). This weekend, the Tigers and Mustangs clash on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Pacific and Cal Poly have a lengthy history with the Tigers ahead 17-13 in the all-time series. The Mustangs are looking to find a way back to the dominant stretch they had over the Tigers, once holding an eight-match win streak from 2015-22.
