SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly men’s tennis battled hard but ultimately fell to the University of Denver by a score of 4-3 on Monday afternoon at the Ronca Tennis Center.
The dual match began with the Pioneers claiming the doubles point. Denver claimed victories on courts two and three to secure the early 1-0 lead. The duo of Mishiro/Rovai defeated Aaron Eliscu and Sean Kamyshev 6-4 on court two, while Beduhn/Papajcik followed with a 6-3 win over Raz Haviv and Luc Hoeijmans on court three. The top doubles match between Coats/Robb-Wilcox (DEN) and Jovan Lubbe/Leo Matthysen (CP) went unfinished with the score tied at 5-5.
Down Jack Cross already, due to a fractured rib, Hoeijmans was pulled from the singles lineup as a precaution from his own knocks. That meant Lubbe would once again don the mantle of No. 1 while Sean Ferguson and Matthysen both earned their second opportunities of the season.
The Pioneers extended their lead to 2-0 when Connor Robb-Wilcox handed Sean Kamyshev a decisive 6-3, 6-1 win on court five. Cal Poly responded to get on the board shortly after, as Sean Ferguson dominated Aaron Beduhn 6-3, 6-2 on court six to cut the deficit to 2-1.
At the top of the lineup, Jovan Lubbe secured a critical victory, defeating Samuel Rovai in straight sets 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 to tie the overall match at 2-2. Lubbe is now also tied with Cross and Hoeijmans for second on the team in singles wins (8) and extended his solo win streak to five matches.
The Mustangs built on top of the momentum when, on court four, Leo Matthysen outlasted Ryoma Mishiro in a three-set battle, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to pull Cal Poly up 3-2. Theo Coats rallied from a set down to defeat Aaron Eliscu 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 on court three to once again knot the battle.
With the team score tied, the contest came down to court two. There, Denver’s Raffaello Papajcik edged Raz Haviv in a hard-fought three-setter, winning 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 to clinch the 4-3 victory for the Pioneers.
Cal Poly falls to 9-6 on the season with the loss.
