MALIBU, Calif. — The Cal Poly women’s tennis team started a three-match road swing with a 7-0 defeat at No. 2 Pepperdine on Saturday.
Battling an extremely talented Pepperdine side that advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago, the Mustangs (7-6) gave the Waves (12-4) everything they could handle in doubles play.
Redshirt junior Amy Leather and freshman Tia Bonita Jakupovic-Kljako earned the first doubles victory, winning 6-3 at No. 3 to improve to 4-3 as a pairing.
Pepperdine won 6-4 at No. 2 to force the doubles point to all come down to the result at No. 1. Senior Kennedy Buntrock and sophomore Jessica MacCallum went point-for-point with the Waves’ top pairing, but came up short in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4).
The Waves all six singles matches in straight sets.
Cal Poly travels to Texas to face UT Arlington at 9 a.m. PDT on Tuesday and No. 25 TCU at 3:30 p.m. PDT on Wednesday.
