
No. 72 Cal Poly Splits Weekend Road Trip with 4-1 Triumph Over Bobcats

BOISE, Idaho — Cal Poly men's tennis concluded its Idaho road trip on a high note Saturday, once again overpowering their opponent in singles to defeat Montana State 4-1. The victory improves the Mustangs to 10-5 on the season with momentum ramping up to the upcoming conference slate.
Although the match was initially supposed to take place at host site Appleton Tennis Center, it was moved to an indoor facility due to weather.
The Bobcats struck first by claiming the doubles point. On court one, Jovan Lubbe and Leo Matthysen fell 6-2 to start. The Mustangs answered back at the No. 2 position, where Raz Haviv and Luc Hoeijmans cruised 6-3, but the Bobcats secured the point with a 6-3 victory at the third spot, edging Jack Cross and Sean Kamyshev.
Cal Poly responded emphatically in singles, winning four completed matches in straight sets to clinch the dual.
The Mustangs quickly evened the score at 1-1 when, at the top of the lineup, Jovan Lubbe delivered a powerful opening statement with a 6-2, 6-1 result. Lubbe improves to 7-5 overall with two unfinished matches and is riding a four-match win streak at singles.
Leo Matthysen, thrust into No. 6 singles after Sean Kamyshev was replaced at No. 5 by Aaron Eliscu, dispatched Max Calaquian 6-2, 6-2. Matthysen is now 2-0 overall in singles with one unfinished match this season.
Aaron Eliscu put Cal Poly ahead 3-1 with a commanding 6-3, 6-2 victory at the No. 5 position. The win keeps Eliscu unbeaten since Feb. 28 and improves his impressive singles record to a team-leading 9-2 overall on the season.
Jack Cross sealed the team victory at No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-1, pushing his overall singles record to 8-5 on the year and tying Luc Hoeijmans for second on the team.
Two matches went unfinished with the team result already decided. At No. 2 singles, Luc Hoeijmans led Andre Stewart 6-3, 4-4, while at No. 3, Raz Haviv was ahead of Oumar Diallo 7-5, 4-1 when play was halted.
With finals week on the horizon at Cal Poly, the Mustangs take next week to rest before hosting Denver at Ronca Tennis Center on Monday, March 23 at 11:00 a.m.
