SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Senior Kennedy Buntrock remained undefeated in singles play, but the Cal Poly women’s tennis team dropped a thrilling hard-fought match to Boise State on Friday at the Ronca Tennis Center, losing 4-3.
The Mustangs opened the dual by rolling to the doubles point. Juniors Natalie Lynch and Candela Aparisi cruised to a 6-2 victory at No. 2 to improve to 2-1 as a pairing this season. Then seniors Alexandra Ozerets and Sarah MacCallum clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 triumph at No. 3, improving to 2-0 as a pairing.
Heading into singles play up 1-0, the Mustangs looked to fend off Boise State, but a pair of straight-set wins at No. 3 and No. 6 allowed the Broncos to take their first lead of the match at 2-1.
Lynch leveled the match at 2-2 with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 5, improving to 2-2 on the year. The three remaining singles matches all went to a third set.
Ozerets won the first set in her match at No. 4 6-2, but dropped the next two sets, allowing Boise State to take a 3-2 lead.
With Boise State on the verge of clinching the dual, the Mustangs needed to win the two remaining singles matches to emerge victorious. Buntrock did her best to make that happen, earning several breaks in the third set of her match at No. 1 to capture a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 win and tie the match at 3-3. She improved to 4-0 on the year.
It all came down to court No. 2 and sophomore Jessica MacCallum left it all on the court, but came up short, 6-0, 6-7 (3-7), 2-6.
Cal Poly (1-3) will look to bounce back when they host Saint Mary’s (1-1) at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Ronca Tennis Center.
