NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The Cal Poly men’s track and field program made history on Saturday inside the Loftus Sports Center at Notre Dame, establishing a school record in the men’s distance medley relay.
Competing in its first men’s DMR in program history, Carson Smith, Vincent Atilano, Aidan McCarthy and Chris Caudillo helped the Mustangs cross the finish line with a time of 9:25.05 to place eighth in a loaded field at the Alex Wilson Invite.
The time is currently the 15th fastest ran in the country this indoor season. The Mustangs were aiming for a time that would earn them a spot at the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 13-14 in Arkansas, but only the top 12 relay times in the nation qualify for the meet.
A DMR consists of a 1,200-meter leg, followed by a 400, an 800 and then a 1,600 (or mile).
The meet marked the first action of this indoor season for McCarthy, a three-time All-American in the 800 and school record holder in four events.
Five more Mustangs will be in action on Sunday to take part in the Saucony Battle for Boston held inside Boston University’s Track and Tennis Center. Action starts at 4:05 p.m. PST on Sunday and Tatiana Cornejo, Spencer Pickren, Micah Grossman and Miles Cook will all be running miles at the meet, while Lewis Westwood is running an 800. The meet will be streamed live on FloTrack and you can follow the live results HERE.
