BOSTON, Mass. — Tatiana Cornejo continued her sensational indoor track and field season for the Mustangs on Sunday, shattering a 39-year-old school record in the women’s indoor mile.
Running on the blistering track at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center, Cornejo posted a time of 4:29.90 in the mile at the Saucony Battle for Boston to obliterate Teena Colebrook’s 1987 school record of 4:33.4. The time was the 22nd fastest ran in the NCAA this season and was an over 7.8-second personal best for the Elk Grove, Calif. native.
The school record was her second this indoor season after she broke a 43-year-old program record in the women’s indoor 3,000-meter at the Husky Classic last week. Cornejo, the 2024 Big West Women’s Track Athlete of the Year, currently owns four school records as she is the program record holder in both the indoor and outdoor 5,000.
The top 16 individual marks recorded across the country in each event qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 13-14 in Arkansas. With her No. 22 mark, Cornejo will wait to see if enough scratches occur in the event to give her the opportunity to represent the Mustangs at nationals. Currently, her teammate Lexi Evans is in position to qualify for the meet with the sixth-best women’s pole vault mark recorded in the nation this season.
Spencer Pickren, Lewis Westwood, Micah Grossman and true freshman Miles Cook also competed in the Saucony Battle for Boston.
The full list of qualifiers for this year’s NCAA Indoor Championships will be announced on Tuesday, March 3.
