SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly track and field program is eyeing national qualifying marks this weekend while competing in a pair of meets on the other side of the country.
A total of nine Mustangs will be in action, highlighted by the men’s distance medley relay taking part in the Alex Wilson Invitational hosted by Notre Dame on Saturday. This marks the first time in program history the Cal Poly men will be running a distance medley relay.
The distance medley relay is set to begin at 9 a.m. PST on Saturday inside the Loftus Sports Center. Carson Smith is expected to run the 1,200-meter leg, followed by Vincent Atilano running the 400 leg, Aidan McCarthy the 800 leg and Chris Caudillo the 1,600 leg. The quartet will make history just by taking the start line on Saturday, but they are also looking to achieve a time that is fast enough to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 13-14 at the Randal Tyson Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The top 12 relay times and the top 16 marks in individual events across the country will qualify for the meet.

Meanwhile in Boston on Sunday, five Mustangs will compete in the Saucony Battle for Boston on the scorching track at Boston University’s Track and Tennis Center. Action starts at 4:05 p.m. PST on Sunday for the Mustangs when Lewis Westwood races in Section 2 of the men’s 800.
Tatiana Cornejo, who shattered a 43-year-old school record in the women’s indoor 3,000 this past weekend, competes in Section 1 of the women’s mile at 4:35 p.m. PST, Spencer Pickren in Section 2 of the men’s mile at 4:45 p.m. PST, and freshman Miles Cook and Micah Grossman in Section 3 of the men’s mile at 4:45 p.m. PST. For Pickren, this could be his final race as a Mustang as he has no eligibility remaining outdoors.
The meet will be streamed live on FloTrack and you can follow the live results HERE.
