SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Senior Kennedy Buntrock went undefeated in both singles and doubles play, but the Cal Poly women’s tennis team lost its first dual match of the season, falling to BYU 6-1 on Saturday at the Aztec Tennis Center.
Taking on the Cougars (3-1) in a neutral-site match, the Mustangs (0-1) started the day by dropping the doubles point. Buntrock and sophomore Jessica MacCallum teamed up for a 6-4 win at the No. 1 spot for Cal Poly, but BYU won at both No. 2 and No. 3 to secure an early 1-0 lead.
In singles play, the Cougars won in straight sets at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6 to take a 4-0 lead and lock up the dual victory.
Buntrock, a 2025 All-Big West First Team honoree in doubles and a Second Team honoree in singles, earned Cal Poly’s lone singles win on the day, defeating BYU’s Kendall Kovick at the No. 2 spot, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
In her first dual as a Mustang, junior Candela Aparisi — a transfer from Oregon — was able to win the first set in her match at No. 3 before falling short in three sets.
Cal Poly caps off its season-opening road trip at noon Sunday when they take on University of San Diego at the Hogan Tennis Center. Live scoring is available HERE and the match can be seen live on Track Tennis.
