SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Senior Kennedy Buntrock earned a ranked singles victory, but the Cal Poly women’s tennis team came up short to University of San Diego on Sunday at the Hogan Tennis Center.
The Mustangs (0-2) put up a fight against the talented Toreros (2-0) after dropping the doubles point, but it wasn’t enough as they fell 5-2.
Defeats at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles led to Cal Poly trailing 1-0 entering singles play.
After the Mustangs fell at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots in singles, San Diego took a 3-0 advantage, putting them one victory away from clinching the match. However, Cal Poly didn’t go away quietly.
At No. 1 Buntrock stepped up and grabbed a victory in straight sets over Hannah Read, who is ranked 53rd in the country in the latest ITA individual rankings. She won 6-3, 7-5, improving to 2-0 on the season.
The three remaining singles matches all went to a third set as senior Alexandra Ozerets, junior Candela Aparisi and sophomore Jessica MacCallum all battled to try to complete a Mustang comeback. Unfortunately, MacCallum and Aparisi both fell short in the third allowing USD to clinch the win.
Ozerets was able to emerge victorious at the No. 4 spot as her opponent retired in the third set with her leading 3-2.
Cal Poly returns to San Luis Obispo to host its Big West and home opener against UC Davis on Sunday, Feb. 1, at 11 a.m. at the Ronca Tennis Center.
