Mustangs Open Spring with Strong Showing in Berkeley

BERKELEY, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis team opened its spring season this Friday through Sunday at the Cal Winter Invite.

The Mustangs battled players from the host Golden Bears, Stanford and Saint Mary's in singles and doubles play across the three-day tournament. The event served as a strong tuneup for the Mustangs as they faced some stiff competition from Stanford and Cal, who are ranked No. 9 and No. 15 respectively in the Preseason ITA national poll.

Senior Sarah MacCallum, sophomore Jessica MacCallum and freshman Olivia Mlouk all posted two singles victories during the tourney, going 2-1. Overall, seven of the 11 Mustangs that competed recorded at least one singles win.

In doubles, senior Kennedy Buntrock and Jessica MacCallum went 2-1 while playing together. After losing their first doubles match Friday to a tough Cal pairing, the duo bounced back with victories on Saturday and Sunday, defeating Laura Cilekova and Tiziana-Marie Schomburg from Cal 6-3, and the Golden Bears' Greta Greco Lucchina and Naomi Xu 6-1.

Three other Cal Poly doubles pairings notched a victory — Candela Aparisi/Natalie Lynch, Tia Bonita Jakupovic-Kljako/Aspen Chung and Mlouk/Alexandra Ozerets.

Cal Poly will open the dual portion of its season next weekend in San Diego when the Mustangs face BYU on Saturday, Jan. 24, followed by University of San Diego on Sunday, Jan. 25. Both matches are scheduled to start at noon.
